When English Isn’t Just a Language, But a Barrier.

In the past, learning something new—like a language or a musical instrument—often began with a book. We’d start at page one and work our way through, patiently and persistently. But times have changed.

Today, the print media has paved way for digital media. Learning is more accessible than ever—just search for a beginner tutorial and you’re off.

Nowadays, there are numerous online platforms offering high-quality content. There are variety of courses available on platforms like Coursera, Udemy, LinkedIn Learning and YouTube videos.

But what if I'm not a beginner, and I already have some knowledge but need help with specific topics?. No problem, Thanks to the internet, there's a solution for almost everything.. Search for specific topic or pick advanced level tutorial on that specific subject.

As we often say, “With the internet , Life got easier."

But what if I do not know my weaknesses : how to pick the advanced topics?

A Personal Struggle with Spoken English

I just get unwelcome glances or stares when I speak in English. I do check pronunciation of words that I do not know, but when I speak something must not be right. Why am I asked to repeat my sentences again and again?

A friend once advised me to consume more English content to improve my spoken English. He suggested to make a routine of watching English news, English drama series English movies, documentaries with English subtitles. Speak a lot. Make mistakes. People will rectify you.

It was good advice. But life isn’t always that simple.

This approach didn’t work for two main reasons. First, I am a working professional. Life has got busy with juggling professional and personal commitments.  And second, in the office environment, making mistakes does bring rectifications but also bring ramifications. My peers formed a negative impression due to my spoken English and began excluding me from client interactions. My manager heard my mistakes and encouraged me to improve but held back both an onsite opportunity and an increment because of my spoken English.

I turned to language apps and teachers, hoping for a breakthrough. But every time, I had to start from scratch. Either I start from the beginner level OR irrelevant role plays for the scenarios that I do not need OR I am asked to practice daily to keep my streak , which keep me hooked to the app rather than to the solution I need. I didn’t need to learn how to order food at a restaurant. I needed to confidently present in meetings, explain project updates, and connect with clients. If only I could get customized lessons specific to my improvement areas and practice speaking on those sentences relevant to my weaknesses.

How this problem should be tackled

Recognizing our problem areas in English involves a combination of self-assessment, practice, and feedback. Here are some effective strategies to help us identify and improve our weak points:

1. Self-Assessment

·       Take Diagnostic Tests: Use online tests to evaluate your skills. Look for tests that provide explanations for your errors.

2. Practice Exercises

·       Targeted Practice Exercises: Focus on specific sounds/words/sentences/phrases. Check the websites that offer these exercises.

3. Seek Feedback

·       Review:  Ask for feedback from peer/expert or an app. They may spot issues you overlook.

·       Error Correction: Record yourself, listen to the errors, correct and repeat the exercise.

A good Assessment should be:

  • Positive and clear: covering tone, pace, and clarity

  • Goal-focused: tied to your specific objectives

  • Practical - Combined with training and real-life use

Speakho

All these strategies comes in “Speakho” the AI-powered tool. It will help find your problem areas and you can work on specific solutions. It assess your improvement areas and create lesson plans customised for you. It will provide you practice lessons relevant to your lesson plan so you can improve your spoken English.

The assessment reports measure pronunciation, fluency, and clarity, providing detailed feedback to help learners improve their verbal communication skills effectively.

The detailed assessment report contains the number of errors and error patterns. Generally, there are some patterns in which we make mistakes. For example, sometimes, while speaking, we drop the ending sound of the word. Sometimes, we do not speak  properly because our tongue is not rolled correctly. The report contains the top five error patterns. Along with that, it will also give some suggestions on how you can improve those error patterns. And provide more details about all the mispronunciations of words at the phoneme level. Also, the rate of speech you are speaking, whether slow or fast.

Why this matters

Imagine millions of professionals, students, and job seekers worldwide who struggle with spoken English. They prepare for interviews, presentations, or client meetings but often feel unsure of themselves. In many cases, they’re asked to repeat themselves multiple times because their speech isn’t clear enough.

Speakho listens to how someone speaks, identifies their strengths and mistakes, and creates a personalized practice plan. By focusing only on what matters most for each user, Speakho helps them improve fluency, clarity, and confidence much faster.

Improving spoken English isn’t just about learning more—it’s about learning smarter. It’s about recognizing that each learner is different, and one-size-fits-all solutions don’t work for everyone.

If you’ve ever felt stuck, unheard, or underestimated because of how you speak, you’re not alone. And you don’t have to keep starting over. With the right tools, the right feedback, and a little compassion—for yourself and others—you can move forward with confidence.

Because English should be a bridge, not a barrier.
